Why Resting on the Weekend Isn’t Lazy, it’s Necessary

After a week filled with work, school pickups, homework help, cooking dinner, cleaning up messes, and juggling all the things, finally make it to the weekend. But if you’re anything like me, instead of taking a breath, your brain immediately shifts into catch-up mode. Laundry piles, grocery lists, to-do lists… it never ends.
Lately, though, I’ve been rethinking that mindset. What if we stopped treating rest as something we need to earn, and started seeing it as something we deserve?
Rest is Not a Reward, It’s a Requirement
Our culture glorifies being busy, especially for moms. If you’re not hustling, are you even doing enough? But let me tell you: burnout doesn’t look good on anyone. Resting, really resting, helps us show up better for our families and ourselves.
This weekend, I gave myself permission to slow down. I didn’t check off every task. I didn’t organize the playroom or deep-clean the fridge. I read a book, took a nap, sat in the sun while the kids played. And you know what? Monday felt a little less overwhelming.
What Rest Can Look Like
Rest doesn’t have to mean laying in bed all day (though no judgment if that’s your vibe). It might look like:
• Taking a walk without your phone
• Drinking your coffee while it’s still hot with my favorite Yeti
• Doing a face mask while your kids watch a movie (link to self-care products)
• Journaling, meditating, or just breathing for 5 minutes in silence
• Saying “no” to one thing that doesn’t serve you
Rest is an Act of Trust
When I rest, I remind myself that the world won’t fall apart if I pause. That I can be a good mom, a present partner, and a capable woman, and still not do it all this weekend.
It’s not laziness. It’s resilience.
So this is your reminder: slow down. Let the laundry wait. Let the dishes sit. Choose rest. Monday will come soon enough, but your peace doesn’t have to wait.
